Pet Endocrinology (Hormones)

At Pike Veterinary Services, we manage pet endocrine conditions by catching them early through comprehensive preventative care.

Aspects of Pet Endocrinology

The endocrine system is made up of tissues and glands that release hormones into the bloodstream. These hormones regulate metabolism, growth, development, and reproduction and are dispersed to different areas of the body, depending on the hormone’s function.

When a hormonal balance is disturbed (by a tumor or autoimmune disease, for instance), an endocrine disorder can develop, causing the endocrine system to under or overproduce hormones related to these processes.

While these endocrine conditions can be serious or even potentially life-threatening, they are more manageable when caught early and given proper treatment. Our endocrinology services diagnose and address these issues before they become a problem.

common endocrine disorders in dogs and cats:

  • Diabetes mellitus: Caused by a deficiency in or resistance to the hormone insulin.
  • Hypothyroidism: Often diagnosed in dogs, this condition indicates that the animal has low levels of thyroid hormone.
  • Hyperthyroidism: Frequently affecting cats, this indicates that the animal has high levels of thyroid hormones.
  • Addison’s disease and Cushing’s disease: These conditions can affect both species, although Cushing’s disease is rare in cats.
